Who, or what, is the Melville Jazz Society?
Some of us are music teachers, some of us are amateur musicians, some of us are singers, some of us are parents of budding musicians/singers and some of us have no musical ability at all! But the one thing that brings us together as a group is the love of one or more aspects of the musical genre we call "JAZZ".
As a group our function is to promote jazz education and support the community in its appreciation of jazz music. We are a new organization, formed from the annual jazz retreat which was sponsored in its formative years by the Melville Band and Choir Boosters (to whom we owe a great debt of gratitude). After the band boosters struggled for several years to support the retreat and found it increasingly difficult to carry on doing so financially, a group of concerned citizens of Melville came together to take on the responsibility of the retreat. However, the retreat is not ALL that we are about - jazz is what we are about and we work continuously to introduce this tremendous musical genre to Melville and district.
Anyone wishing to assist us in our efforts is most welcome to join as a member. The load is light, but the benefits are many. For a paltry $5.00 lifetime membership fee, you get the following benefits:
1. The satisfaction of knowing that you are helping to promote jazz in the local community and beyond,
2. The opportunity to help organize an annual retreat that is constantly growing and educating our youth musically in ways they never dreamed of,
3. The chance to express your ideas and opinions and vote on issues facing the society, and...best of all....
4. Our secret decoder ring! (well, that's still in the works, or should I say, at the bottom of the cereal box)
If you would like to support our organization in its efforts and would like to purchase a membership, please send us an email ('Contact Us' page) and we would be most happy to have you on board!
